IKEA Hack: Bookshelf to Media Console

IKEA hacks.  Who doesn't love them?  You take an IKEA piece - simple, reliable, maybe a little bland - and you spice it up to give it some new life or transform it to meet your new furniture needs.  In our case, we did a little of both.  The best part of these projects is that they're a fun, easy, and cheap way to create your dream furniture all on your own!  All you need is some spray paint, tape, a sheet to paint over, and a nice spot of grass on a sunny day - plus your IKEA piece.  :)

We had a little bookshelf, and we needed a media center for the the new office/den.  How do you get from point A to point B?  Lay the bookshelf on its side and voila - media center with storage units!  Now for the fun part: aesthetics.  Our bookshelf was just a little too plain for the new room.  It desperately needed some color.

So that's what we gave the little guy.

Teri decided on a black exterior with a creamy white on the interior - all matte.  For this project, we needed three cans of the white paint and one of the black.  Here's the spray paint we picked up from Home Depot:

Rust-Oleum Chiffon Cream Ultra Matte Interior Chalked Spray Paint
Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Flat Black Spray Paint

First, we took out the shelves and placeholders and cleaned out the inside.  Then we spray painted the three sides and the front trim of the case and shelves black.  After the black dried, we taped down the all the front trims so we could paint the interior white.

As you can see in the above picture, our first coat of the white came out super splotchy.

Second coat: still kind of splotchy, but some improvement.  At this point we were thinking maybe it just needed to dry more, so we just kept on painting and hoping for the best.  One helpful hint (that's also kind of obvious):  spray paint on flat surfaces to avoid any dripping!

Next was the shelves:

And that was it!  Turns out the white just needed multiple coats and drying time for the splotches to disappear.  Here's the finished product:

What do you guys think?  Are you ready to transform your old IKEA furniture into your new favorite piece?!

Love,
Sydney

The Brightest Kitchen in Kigali!

I'm so excited to share with everyone my latest kitchen interior design project, and the bright young woman who lives here!  Claire is a neighbor, a friend, and a client of NAFASI! She had just decided she was ready to settle into her Kigali house, but wasn't quite satisfied with it as her and her son's home . Luckily Claire called on NAFASI, had some great visions of what home meant to her, and we opened up her space into the cheery welcoming kitchen you see now!  This is how it used to look: Can you believe it!?!? Claire worked with her landlord, as she is renting the house, to share costs for the renovation. It was win-win for everyone! A lot of landlords are ready to make renovations on older homes, and willing to pay for the renovation costs that come with it. Claire was responsible for the interior design costs. This way the owner is able to get free design, and the value increases greatly on their home, and the tenant gets the home they actually ...

We've Waited Long Enough!

It is now time for the big reveal!!!!! I have had such a huge internal debate over when I was ready to share finished photos of our home in Kigali. While most of our friends would have said it was completely done 6 months ago (!) I still don't actually feel like it's really finished.   I'm still changing up porch furniture, debating curtains, and I'm not quite pleased with the legs of the island yet- to name a few!  However,  it is time to get the photos out there, and to move on with all of the other Kigali homes and projects I've been working on and need to share with you too! I will be sure to update the blog with all of my own home changes as I make them. And you know I will! ;) So let's take a brief home tour of only the best shots for now! Starting with our front porch. I hope you like it!!! Keep in mind, I could do this for you and your home too. ;) ( www.nafasiinteriors.com ) I added these breezey curtains for a vacation-y relaxing vibe....
